Beards are all the rage these days so it is only natural beard oils are all the rage too. With the marketplace chocked full of options how do you find the perfect beard oil?

Here are a few things to look for:

Quick absorption. Beard oils need to be readily absorbed by the beard. Many oils just coat the follicle and leave you looking like you need a shower. Look for a beard oil that contains sunflower oil, jojoba oil, grape seed oil, or apricot kernel oil. Deep conditioning. Scratchy, bristly beards are a real turn-off to the person you want to get close with. Bear oil should make your beard softer and more fun to touch. Avocado oil is great oil to condition and soften your beard. Skin-friendly. Beard oil is not just for your beard. It needs to be good for your facial complexion. No one wants oily skin so the beard oil needs to be made with ingredients that your face will love. Once again, jojoba oil and sunflower oil are great options, as is argon oil. Honest scents. It’s amazing how many beard oils are made of wonderful natural oils like jojoba and avocado only to be polluted with synthetic fragrances that contain chemicals known to cause birth defects, nervous system disorders, cancer, and allergies. Look for beard oils that exclusively use essential oils for aroma.

These are the criteria we used at New Harmony Soap Co. when developing our Nipper’s Natural™ Beard Oil which is a blend of golden jojoba oil, avocado oil, and organic sunflower oil. Right now we offer this fine product scented with our popular Men’s #1™ aroma blend of Virginia cedar, Eucalyptus, and Clove essential oils. The bottle is a generous 3.4 fl. oz. amber glass flask that will provide months of beard perfection.

2016 Gift Giving Guide was last modified: December 6th, 2016 by Jim Spann

As you mature your skin changes. And for many the face is where this change is most noticeable. Years of sun, stress, makeup, and the application of unhealthy skin care products can leave your complexion looking dull, tired, and prematurely aged.

Thankfully we’ve found that mature skin can be beautifully resuscitated with an all-natural daily regimen that includes a botanically-charged and bio-active toner.

Toners based in water and/or alcohol are a bad idea. Rather, we recommend a toner that lists witch hazel distillate as its primary ingredient. It’s important to look for the word ‘distillate’ as this means the natural chemical compounds of the witch hazel have not been extracted with the use of alcohol or some industrial solvents, i.e. the ingredient is pure.

Further, there is a myriad of really unhealthy stuff in face toners, even the expensive ones, that you want to avoid. For example, a well-known and respected body care company that is frequently recommended by Dermatologists markets an alcohol-free and hypoallergenic Face Toner that contains the following: Water, PEG-4, Butylene Glycol, Polysorbate 20, Ceteth-24, Choleth-24, Panthenol, Glycereth-26, Sodium PCA, Benzalkonium Chloride, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Chloride, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Fragrance. DISGUSTING!

For comparison, here is an introduction to the ingredients we use in our Moisturizing Face Toner for Mature Skin.

Apple Extract – Contains alpha-hydroxy acids, which refines and rejuvenates the skin. Known for its moisturizing and anti-aging properties. Perfect for dry or mature skin. Has exceptional elastase (an enzyme that breaks down proteins) inhibition activity. Ideal natural treatment for maintaining the skin’s youthful elasticity.

Cucumber Peel Extract – Renowned for anti-inflammatory and skin-tightening properties, rich in vitamins, minerals and enzymes essential for strong cell growth and repair.

Lactobacillus Ferment – Balances skin microflora and improves absorption of fruit and plant extracts.

Sodium Lactate – A potent humectant and moisturizer derived from beets and corn.

Watermelon Fruit Extract – Supports UV-stressed immune system of the skin and can be used to prevent photo-aging. This extract also helps protect skin from every day toxins and promotes cell-renewal.

Witch Hazel Distillate – One of nature’s best astringents, there is probably no better tonic or toner for skin care.

coffee, soap, natural, body care

There are few aromas in the world more comforting and inspiring than Coffee. So when we finally found a source of all-natural essential oil cold-pressed from Brazilian coffee seeds we knew exactly what we had to do.

Voila! We give you Good Morning! Coffee Soap. This moisturizing body soap is made with organic Coconut, Sunflower and RSPO Palm Oils plus raw Shea Butter. In addition to the Coffee Essential Oil we’ve bumped up the depth of aroma with a cold-brewed coffee concentrate and finely ground espresso beans from our friends at New Harmony’s Black Lodge Coffee Roasters.

Take a bar of this soap into your shower and you’re mood will quickly get the message… it is a Good Morning!

Essential Oils have been around for millennia but never have they been more popular than in 2016.

At New Harmony Soap Company we use lots of essential oils to scent our natural skin nutrition products which means we buy in large quantities to get maximum price discounts from our trusted suppliers. This means we can offer some of the more popular and valuable essential oils for substantially less than what you might otherwise pay.

Routinely we are asked how to best use essential oils at home. The ways are numerous but here are six of the more popular uses for essential oils at home:

Jacuzzis and Hot Tubs. Use 6 – 8 drops of your favorite essential oil in your tub and fire up the jets! Our personal favorite for this application: Eucalyptus and Grapefruit. Wet Compress. Heat up some distilled water and add a few drops of EO. Then immerse a clean cloth, squeeze out the excess, and place over face until cloth becomes cool. Our personal faves for this application: Lavender after a long day; Robber’s Gold when feeling like a cold or flu is coming on. Room Deodorizer. Fill an empty spray bottle with distilled water then add 10 drops of your favorite EO. Shake before each use. Our personal favorite: Lemongrass. Cleaning. Add EO to water or white vinegar to make a very effective cleaner for countertops, glass, bath fixtures, tile floors and laundry. If you’re looking for an EO with serious antiviral, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties look no further than Tea Tree Oil. It’s the bomb! Toilet Paper Roll. Before installing a new roll of toilet paper, place a few drops of Essential Oil inside the paper tube. Each time you pull the roll your nose will be given a treat. Rosemary is great for this application. Sleeping. Place a drop of EO on the collar of your pajamas or bathrobe when getting ready for bed. The aroma will help your mind relax.  Of course, Lavender is famous for promoting relaxation. For an alternative try Robber’s Gold. Peppermint and/or Eucalyptus if you have a head cold.

6 Great Ways to Use Essential Oils at Home was last modified: January 18th, 2016 by Jim Spann

We live in a world where bigger is believed to be better. In corporate America companies gobble up their competitors and promise the customer will benefit from the “synergies” of consolidation. Synergy is code for headcount reduction (job loss) and other expense-reducing measures. The newfound profit usually gets shared between shareholders and executives. But what about the customer? Yea-a-h-h… about that. Let’s look at a few examples.

In 2000 the Unilever behemoth acquired Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream. Did the customer benefit? Did the synergies lower the cost of a pint? Nope. Did the synergies improve the quality of ingredients? Hardly. So, surely, with the automation and technology available within the world’s third largest consumer goods conglomerate, the customer must have been given a wider selection of ice cream options. In reality, the options have been reduced considerably. Customer favorites like Wavy Gravy were terminated because they were not profitable enough.

Remember Burt’s Bees? It was once a company with deeply loyal customers. Now it is a “brand” within the Clorox Company. How about Tom’s of Maine? Consumed by Colgate-Palmolive, it is no longer a company belonging to people with a deep connection to their customer. If Burt’s Bees and Tom’s of Maine disappeared tomorrow neither Unilever nor Colgate-Palmolive would feel more than a moment of loss.

In all three examples, the customer is the loser. What we’ve discovered is that everytime a new layer of separation is added between the maker of a product and the buyer of the product, value is diminished, i.e. the customer gets less for their dollar.

New Harmony Soap Company is dedicated to our customers. While our business goal is to grow we believe the only way to be successful is by staying close to the customer. This is our definition of “better”. I have more to say but I’ll save it for a future blog post.

Thanks for reading!

Aromatherapy is the practice of using natural plant oils and botanical materials to enhance psychological and physical well-being. It’s amazing how our nose feeds our brain with catalysts that are transformed into very specific messages sent to other parts of our body to spur improvements in our mood and even our physical condition. It’s not voodoo… our brains are wired so that smell, sound, sight, and touch impact our inner balance.

When most people think of aromatherapy they imagine it being an event like at a day spa. This then leads them to thinking about the time and money it takes for such an experience. For most the next step is to brush the whole idea aside as being impractical.

At New Harmony Soap Company we integrate aromatherapy into your lifestyle and into your day. Start your morning with a Skin Nutrition Body Bar in the shower and you’ll have an instant aromatherapy session. Follow that up with our After Shower Nutrition Mist or Everyday All Over Lotion and the aromatherapy will continue as you drive to work, clean the house, or go shopping.

Each day before I walk to work I spritz my face with our Aftershave for Men. As I walk, I breathe in fresh, crisp air along with the aromas of Virginia Cedar, Eucalyptus, and Clove. These plant oils energize me, help me focus, and clarify my thoughts. During winter months they also help me deal with nasal congestion and a compromised upper respiratory system.

We encourage you to make aromatherapy part of your lifestyle. The soaps and body care products at New Harmony Soap Company are affordable, practical, and effective for this purpose (and many others that we’ll discuss in future articles).

Aromatherapy for Busy People was last modified: December 1st, 2014 by Jim Spann

I’m a big fan of and contributor to an organization called Green America. They are good advocates for things that usually support a healthier planet and healthier people. Well, a few days ago I received their 2015 National Green Pages catalog and was thrilled to see a feature article entitled “Are Your Body Care Products Toxic?”

The first section explains how there are about 85,000 chemicals used in the U.S. and only five — let that sink in for a moment, FIVE — are banned by the EPA for Body Care products. A whopping 62,000 were “grandfathered in” and have never been tested while another 23,000 are considered “new” and are not subject to testing unless the EPA can prove it poses an unreasonable risk. How does that make you feel? A little paranoid? Perhaps a LOT paranoid.

The food industry is riddled with similar problems and American Consumers are finally taking back their power and responsibility. How are they doing this? They are getting to know their farmers. People are increasingly buying their food from a person, a family, or a small business whom they’ve personally assessed and deemed to be a trustworthy supplier. People doing business with like-minded people. Looking one another in the eyes. Trusting and holding one another accountable. This creates a real, honest, sustainable economy — and better communities. When it comes to food the new catchphrase is “Who’s Your Farmer?” Everyone expects to know their accountant, lawyer, and doctors . Now it’s time to know your farmer.

So let’s carry that idea forward… Who’s Your Soap Maker? Who do you know that is dedicated to producing soap and body care products that are totally free of the thousands of chemicals commonly found in products at the drugstore and grocery? Who do you know that is dedicated to integrating the healing powers of mother nature into the stuff you rub into your skin?

At New Harmony Soap Company we invite you to call, e-mail, visit, or Facebook us anytime. Ask any question about any ingredient. I assure you every single item we use has been seriously scrutinized for safety and efficacy. We would be truly honored to be your soap and body care maker.
